Saving energy at home doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, with a little help from a friendly neighbor, grandchild, or even your own two hands, you can make a big difference—without turning your home into a science experiment! Here are three easy ways to cut down on energy use and keep a little extra money in your pocket.
1. Switch to LED Light Bulbs (Or Ask Someone To Do It!)
Still using those old incandescent bulbs? They waste a ton of energy and burn out faster than my patience waiting on hold with customer service! LED bulbs last up to 25 times longer and use way less electricity. The best part? Just ask your grandson or neighbor to swap them out for you—you only have to do it once in a blue moon!
2. Unplug the Energy Hogs
Did you know that even when your TV, microwave, or coffee maker is turned off, it’s still using electricity? It’s called phantom power, and no, it’s not a spooky ghost running up your bill. Just unplug devices when you’re not using them, or even better, use a power strip with an on/off switch. One quick flip, and you're saving energy like a pro.
3. Adjust the Thermostat (Just a Little!)
Lowering your thermostat by just 2-3 degrees in the winter or raising it in the summer can make a noticeable difference on your bill. And if you have a programmable thermostat, you can set it and forget it—kind of like that slow cooker you love. Not sure how to do it? Grandkids love pressing buttons; give them something useful to do!

Saving energy is easy, and every little bit helps. Plus, think of all the extra money you’ll save for more important things—like treating yourself to dessert!
